The Cake. But Not Just Any Cake.
A story about the nerdiest and sweetest gift ever… sent to me.
Before you read this story, you should probably go read The First “Hangout”. It will actually help you understand what’s happening here.
Now that you’re back (or pretending you read it), let’s continue.
During one of our regular conversations, she casually mentioned that she would send me a graduation gift. I had just graduated from college, and nothing felt more rewarding than knowing she was proud of me. I simply smiled and wondered what kind of gift it could be. Knowing her, it definitely wouldn’t be anything ordinary.
One Thursday morning, she texted me.
“Are you going to be home all day?”
Very suspicious question. But I was fine with it, after all, I had showered that day (blink twice if you believe me).
“Yes,” I replied. “I’m working from home today. Why?”
“Good,” she said. “I’m sending a bomb your way.”
Now, under normal circumstances, that would be a very concerning message to receive. But coming from her, and knowing we had both sent each other “bombs” before, I assumed she was secretly conducting some kind of logistical operation. I just had no idea what kind of chaos that would turn out to be.
By the afternoon, a delivery guy called asking for directions to my place. A few minutes later he called again to say he had arrived. I was deep in work at the time, so I sent my brother to receive the package.
Hours later, when I finally took a break, I noticed a box sitting on my kitchen table.
Inside was a cake. But not just any cake.
It had a² + b² = c² written on it. Now, my friend, if you don’t know what that formula is… it’s time to dust off those old math books.
I stood there staring at it for a solid minute, trying to process what I was looking at. Somewhere in my head I could hear her voice in that playful tone she always used, like she was standing next to me saying, “Go on… figure it out.”
She had also asked me to record a reaction video, which was unfortunate because I had absolutely no idea what reaction a “math cake” deserved.
Should I solve it? Should I eat it? Should I find the value of c before cutting it?
The creativity completely caught me off guard, but what surprised me even more was the thought behind it. Here was someone I admired deeply who had clearly taken time to think about something that would make me smile and somehow the answer she landed on was geometry frosting. That meant she was getting to know me because she had noticed just how nerdy I was.
Later that evening, I sent her a long chain of thank-you messages. Probably too many. I told her how much I loved the cake and how it had completely made my day. The delusional part of me likes to imagine her jumping on her bed in excitement but in reality, she responded the way she always did, casually brushing it off like it was no big deal.
The cake itself was delicious. Really, very delicious. Of course, my brother had the biggest slice because that’s just what last-borns do.
Finally, as I lay on my bed that night, staring at the ceiling, I started plotting how I would officialize things and ask her to be my girlfriend. In my head, the plan was brilliant, romantic, and practically foolproof.
Spoiler alert: it didn’t go as planned.
Thanks for dropping in… feel free to explore some of the other stories I’ve shared. they might make you smile… and blink… a bit more.
“Text Me When You Get Home.”
I grew up with my older sister. And I like to believe that, in many ways, she trained me to be a gentleman (blink twice if you think I am). Trust me, when you’re around a woman long enough, watching, listening, paying attention, you realize women aren’t complicated at all. They just want to be
Think You Know Embarrassment? Meet Me in High School
In high school, I had a crush on Uwase (not her real name—just a name for the story). I liked her for a very simple reason: she smelled nice. Don’t think perfume-nice, think fruit-nice. Like apples and mangoes and something vaguely tropical that I still haven’t figured out—maybe I never will. On top of that, she was the most beautiful girl in our class,…
I hate Valentine’s Day
I hate Valentine’s Day. Not because I don’t believe in saints, or in the performative, anti-love, “capitalism ruined romance” kind of way. I hate it simply because that’s the day Keza (not her real name, she will read this) rejected me.
